Scrap Metal Price

Postby alaskalost1 » Tue Aug 16, 2011 2:44 am

I have a question regarding the price yards pay for cars and car parts per ton where other people are.I called our only local shred metal yard up here and was told they pay $50.00 a net ton for cars.Am I missing something or does that seem like a low price. They also will not pay for metal unless you have at least 500 pounds of metal at a time, otherwise they will take it for free.I cant imagine being able to profit on car scrap at that price with gas prices the way they are.Up here were paying $3.76 a gallon right now.Maybe Alaska is too far from the markets to have a good price ?? Thanks for any thoughts here.

That is a terrible price, if you ask me. I am getting $280 per gross ton for a car; I, however, am in an area with more competition. If you havn't done so already, check around for a better scrap yard in Alaska.

Best of Luck!

Gas is $3.79 a Gallon here in Houston and It is Made here. On a side Note seems like Your $50 yard needs another yard there to Drive up the Price they are Paying.

Well today I finally got the truck loaded with all the misc. scrap from appliances and other remnants I had laying around.I brought it to the scrap yard and it ended up being 1000 pounds on the nose. For all that time and work we got $25.00.They pay $50.00 a net ton up here for scrap.I dont see how we have ads on Craigslist offering to buy peoples junk vehicles for $50.00 to $100 dollars. They said they also pay the same amount for car scrap.Unless they pay businesses more per ton than Joe Blow.We need competition up here. They are the only shredder in the state right now.I can understand a little lower price up here because of the extra shipping, but when they are getting $280.00 a ton in the lower 48 that is rediculous.Any thoughts ?? Do I need to talk to them differently or something ?Thanks

Here in my local yard in Southwest Minnesota They are paying $150.oo per ton for car bodies complete or not that includes 5 tires on or in them and maybe $10.oo more if they have aluminum wheels and catalytic converter on them.
I switch out any aluminum wheels with steel and cut converters and as much copper out of them as I can, lately I am stripping all the heavy front wheel drive subframes , motors, trannys and rear axles out of my Dodge caravans for other uses here on the farm, Pickups I use til they die then I make trailers out of them .
I'm saving more alternators and starters for later use too..........or scrap.
I lived on Kodiak Island for a few years in the mid 80s and there was no scrap market there at all ........much to my dismay.
The Aleutian Islands are piled with thousands of tons of WWII military scrap and nobody was doing anything with it. yet I watched huge Sealand cargo ships come and go weekly..........none with containers of shred though.
