wire insulators

Postby jay81 » Mon Jun 11, 2012 5:02 pm

New to the site.

I'm trying to find out if I should take the time to strip the outer layers of wire to get the copper inside of it, or should I just take it to the scrap yard as is.

I want to get the most from my copper wire, and if being lazy is going to cost me a great deal of money, I need to know.

Hey Jay 81

F.I. Let's Go Fishing has posted a great stripper right here

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=844

It looks like something I'm going to build that's for sure.

Good Luck!

Its one of those things each has to guage for themselves as to weather or not something is worththe time.
For me localy, isulated wire with few exceptions pay the same so some double insulated like vacume cleaner and computer cords actualy pay me more if left alone due to the percentage of striped wire recovered but single insulated like lamp cords give a better yeild and increases value by about 20% but only pays around $2 /hr for my time. The heavyier the wire the more since it makes to strip.

I have similar rule for wire stripping, don't bother with the tinned copper, double insulated or narrow wire.

Not sure about your area but tinned wire for me pays as #2 same as appliance wire so it gets striped. I always keep it separated but when I take it in they always weigh both buckets together but dump them in separate bins. Matters not to me as they pay just .15 less than #1 or .20 less than bare bright.
